Brothers In Jazz

Many of you who shop in Worthing will be familiar with the sight of the two young lads playing jazz standards on piano and double bass. 'Brothers in Jazz', Simon and Oliver Tappin, have been playing in the town centre for the last 4 years, and have made a name for themselves locally, having played for the Mayor on several occasions, for local events such as 'Hands Round the Hospital', and have regular bookings in Andy Sparsis' restaurant 'Food'.

Simon & Oliver

Simon studied jazz at Chichester College after teaching himself to play the piano and read music. Realising he needed a good bassist to be a successful jazz pianist, Simon encouraged Oliver to learn jazz standard basslines on an electric bass. Oliver also taught himself to read music and became interested in jazz and its history, and when Simon's music tutor at college said that one of the double basses was for sale, Simon dragged it home on the train to see if Oliver could play it. This was the beginning of their musical career together. Since then they have played at weddings, parties, and even a couple of jazz-lovers' funerals.
